Newcastle - Wylam/Ovingham

As you head out of the city with the urban sprawl of Elswick and Benwell on your right, gradually the countryside opens up. Watch out for fishermen blocking the path. At mile point 161 you will need to cross the busy Scotswood Road onto its north side, soon joining the rail path, only to cross back again two miles later, around the point where the C2C branches off for Rowlands Gill. Carry on towards Newburn, closely following the (well signposted) Tyne along a flat section. Soon you will be passing just south of Heddon on the Wall, a pleasant little village bang on Hadrian's Wall. This is worth a stop off as there is an excellent B&B and The Swan does a good and cheap carvery.
