Seascale
Go straight if you want to get some idea of the size of the Sellafield operation. Sadly they have closed their visitor centre. Or go right to pick up the final section along the diversionary railway and the coast again at Sellafield marshalling yards and pick up the path through the dunes to Seascale.
This last traffic free section is particularly magnificent, confined as it is between the railway and the sea. Here Sustrans have introduced a variety of techniques to produce a narrow path which gives a memorable ride through the shifting sands.
Seascale is another coastal resort which flourished as a result of the Victorian Furness Railway (1850). The beach is magnificent and empty, and at some states of the tide is firm enough to cycle on if you are so inclined.

An imposing Victorian former girls' boarding school, perched above the sands seven miles from Ravenglass. Calder House is now a charming, old-fashioned, well-run seaside hotel with good beers, well priced and well chosen wines, and a competitive and inviting menu.
